After some searching through groups on social media, another Chicago Mag named Phil felt the same way, and they agreed to meet at the Globe Pub on March 22, 2014 for a home match against Crystal Palace. When they walked into the pub, they noticed black and white shirts scattered at the bar and a couple of tables. After Newcastle won the match, thanks to a late Papiss Cisse 2nd half stoppage time goal, they all gathered outside for a chat. Through this discussion, they all knew there had to be other Toon fans in the city. They all stayed in touch, and Adam set out to find more Chicago Mags.
Toon Army Chicago was quickly set up after that, and they set out to find more Newcastle supporters in the greater Chicagoland area. Through other groups on Facebook, Reddit, and posts on Twitter, enough hype was built up to start meeting regularly for the 2014-15 season. The first big meeting took place at the Globe for the season opener against Manchester City. Despite the 2-0 loss, good times were had by everyone who showed up.
After that inaugural season, Toon Army Chicago were encouraged to find less crowded pastures outside the Globe, and we were introduced to the Jamie Hale and his pub, AJ Hudson’s. Since the 2015-16 season, AJ Hudson’s was the watch venue of Toon Army Chicago but as our fan base has grown so has the need for space and a single team pub to call our home. After several offers we moved to our new home The Green Post for the opening day game of the 24/25 Premier League Season where the Toon Army Chicago flag flies proudly outside.
Over the course of that season, multiple members of the group made trips with the Toon Army Chicago flag to matches across England, including an away match at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and a home match against Aston Villa in late February that year.
Throughout its existence, Toon Army Chicago has been a group that brings Newcastle supporters together, hosts traveling fans, and has done some traveling itself. Our flag has been at St. James’ Park numerous times, and it has seen many away ends all over England.
